How To Start Color Coordinating Your Home

Color is such an important factor in decorating your home. Color can look different in different settings. The same color you love during the day can look totally different at night. If you are home more during the day try to look at your colors for furniture, fabrics, rugs, etc. during the daylight. If possible get a sample of the fabric, leather, paint, flooring and wallpaper and take it home. Look at these samples in the room you plan to use them in. If you are rarely at home during the daylight hours then do your color coordinating for that room(s) in the evenings. Then you will enjoy the comfort and atmosphere those colors will create within your home.

Furniture is an important part of your room. Sometimes furniture is the most dominate item in your room. So the furniture must coordinate with one of the colors from your established color palate (the variety of color or colors you have chosen to use). The material or fabric on the furniture determines the look, feel, and sometimes the mood of the room it is in. Furniture helps bring the room alive with color or it can relax the feel of the room by its color texture and style.

Wallpaper, paint or wall coverings also add a large amount of color to a room. Wallpaper can be used as a color palate. Take the colors from the paper and use these color(s) in the room(s). The look of the wallpaper can even create the beginning of the "theme" within that room(s). Textured wallpaper can be painted. The paint enhances the textured designs within the wallpaper.

Paint adds color to your walls. Darker paints make your room look smaller. If you paint the ceiling a darker color than the side walls it makes the ceiling appear to be shorter or closer to you. If you paint the ceiling a lighter color than the walls it makes the ceiling appear to be higher up or taller. Choosing paint colors for your walls can be determined by one or more of the colors within you color palate.

Flooring is another way to add color to your room. There are many different types of flooring such as wood, carpet, tile, painted designs and many more.

Window treatments or curtains play many roles within your home. Color can be added in a major way with the use of window treatments. You can have one of the colors or the entire color palate reflected in the window treatment fabric. The style of window treatments you choose can help make or break the theme you are trying to create in your room. You can add multiple fabrics together within one window treatment to pull all the colors or patterns together. This also adds more interest, shape and creativity.

There are many styles of window treatments. Store bought (usually washable), custom made, no-sewing, shutters, creative (floral, vines), etc. The style, color, and fabric of window treatments create their own look and statement. They echo a reflection of your personality. It is wonderful to see the difference window treatments can make and still allow the sunlight to flow into the room with its warmth and brilliance.

Lighting is very important in any room. Some people need sunlight or artificial lighting as much as possible to feel comfortable in a room. Others don't need as much light or lamps in a room. Some rooms you may want darker than others to help create the proper color tone and mood you are striving to achieve. There are many levels of lighting you can have in your room.

Accessories are another wonderful way to help all the colors of your color palate in your home. Accessories can be art work or pictures, wall hangings, figurines, lamps, flowers, accent pieces, rugs, etc. Accessories can add color, styles, theme, height, dimension, shape, texture, symmetry, and much more. Many times the accessorizing aspect of decorating is overlooked. Accessorizing is the touch that can connect the whole room together to make it look complete.

Color coordinating can be done in so many different ways. You need to find your taste and the colors that make your feel good. When all the colors are put together and they flow from room to room you will feel like you have done something special for yourself and for your family.
