Choosing and purchasing fabric can be easy if you know how. Fabric is usually found in fabric, furniture, or upholstery stores.
It is always best to shop in a fabric store first when looking for the best prices. Fabric stores carry bolts of fabric as well as fabric on hangers. Hanging fabric is sold by a different pricing system called "cut prices."
Cut pricing is more expensive most of the time. Many stores look at a sample hanging on a hanger and decide to bring a bolt of that fabric into their store. When they bring in a 20 - 60 yard bolt of fabric the manufacturer of the fabric will give the store "bolt pricing." Usually that is a discount of almost 40% cheaper than "cut prices."
The fabric samples (cut price) on a hanger have a paper tag attached to it. That paper gives you a lot of information about the fabric. It will tell you the name of the company that makes the fabric, the name of that particular fabric, and the particular color that fabric comes in. The price is considered "cut pricing."
Many times you will have to ask a salesperson how much money per yard the fabric is going to cost you. If you like that fabric, then write down all of the information on the tag that is connected to the fabric. Look for the fabric company name not furniture company name if you are in a furniture store.
After you have all of the information you need written down about that fabric then ask the sales person if they can get you one yard or yardage of the fabric. Don't forget to ask the price per yard.
Do not purchase the yard of fabric yet. It would be best to shop around first to compare prices. If you prefer, you can check out the fabric sample from that store for a few days. Take the sample home in your lighting to make sure you like it. Don't forget that fabric either should establish your color palate or enhance your existing color palate (in most cases).
You can shop around on the telephone, calling the many fabric stores in your area for the best price.
