Illusion Decorating

The holidays are over and it's a perfect time to re-evaluate your home. What changes do you want to make to give your home the look you would love to have?

When you use illusion decorating it can create a look or a certain feeling to your room. This look is added to your room and changes the current atmosphere of that particular room.

Illusion decorating can be very personal. Not everyone feels the same about visual effects when they are looking at something. Here are a few ideas to help uplift or even give the illusion of a face life to your rooms.

If you feel your couch looks too small for your room, hang a picture, mirror, etc. above the couch that is smaller than the couch. This will make the couch appear larger. Try not to make the picture or accessory too small or it will look funny and appear lonely. One small way to make your room look different is to use lighting. Use a lot more or a lot less lighting. This will create a different feel and atmosphere. You can even use different color light bulbs for different effects.

Do you have a small window in your bedroom? Add drapery panels on both sides of the window to make the window appear larger. Extend the rod or pole (that holds the drapes) out 5 to 7 inches beyond the wood molding on each side of the window. If your window is 40 inches wide including the molding, make sure your rod of pole is at least 50 inches wide. The extra width of 10 inches or so will still allow the sunlight to come in the window yet make your window appear larger.

When the fabric of your window treatments match your wallpaper on the wall the window treatments will not stand out. Window treatments will blend into the identical wallpaper.

You can frame your bed with the use of window treatments. Place your bed at the center of the window. Buy a rod of pole the same width as the bed. Add as many drapery panels to the rod as needed on both sides of the window. Also add a top valance over the entire width of the drapery rod to give the bed and the window treatment a finished look.

Calm colors in a room with few accessories give or can create an uncluttered look. Dark colors on ceilings give the illusion that the ceiling is closer to you or that the ceiling is not as high. Light colored ceilings appear to be taller than they are.

Dark walls can give different feelings to different people. For some people dark walls create the atmosphere of a quiet reading room and serenity. To others the same walls can make you feel boxed or closed in. If you like the darker walls you can create them by using paint of paneling. Walls are just the beginning steps in creating this atmosphere. You will also need the proper furniture, accessories and window treatments.

Wallpaper can sure change the feel of a room. Wall murals also can create many illusions. The mural or wallpaper can be pasted to the wall. You can choose a theme such as Noah's ark, etc. You can put palm tree murals the length of your walls. You can choose a jungle theme or have an exotic island theme, all out of wallpaper or murals.

Illusion decorating can be as creative as your imagination. These are just a few ideas to help you get started in creating a special look for your home.
